Geralyn Freeland - Bassoon

Geralyn J. Freeland, Ph.D, (Geri) is co-principal bassoonist of the Moorpark Symphony Orchestra and served as Founding President of the Board of Directors from 2019-20.

Dr. Freeland served in the position of Chief Psychologist, Southern California Region, for the Department of Juvenile Justice prior to her retirement six years ago after 33 years of State service. Over the past four decades, she has enjoyed performing with many orchestras in Southern California, and served as Youth Outreach Coordinator and Vice President on two other orchestral boards.

Dr. Freeland was blessed to be born into a family that supported the musical arts. Her early exposure to all genres of music – Bach, to Rogers and Hammerstein, to the Beatles – provided a foundation for all future musical endeavors, including a highly well-received children’s concert and the development of orchestra programs emphasizing community involvement. Although she matriculated with multiple degrees in psychology, she received a four-year music performance scholarship from Pepperdine University, and continued to perform with orchestras and chamber groups around the Los Angeles area in spite of the demands of graduate school and internships. She saw music not as an activity, but as a necessity in her life and for personal growth. She went on to have a successful career as a psychologist, receiving accolades and honors for her research, involvement at the State level in writing policies and procedures, and as an Oral Commissioner for the Board of Psychology.
